Sunlight hits the solar electric (photovoltaic) panels and is absorbed by silicon, which is a semiconductor. This causes a chemical reaction and the release of electrons that creates DC electricity.

2. The inverter converts DC electricity into AC electricity so that it can be used in your home.

The AC electricity is fed into your homeís existing service panel.

The solar array feeds electricity to your home and the power grid supplements this when the solar system isnít generating enough electricity.

If your solar array generates more electricity than your home is consuming, the excess electricity is sold back to the electric company, resulting in a credit on your electric bill.




Electricity bills for the past year are the best way to determine your electricity usage.This can help you determine what percentage of your electricity use is covered by your solar system.

Your bills indicate the number of kilo-watt-hours (kWh) you consume from the grid. Add together the usage from each bill to get your yearly electricity usage.

For example: an average home may use 5475 kWh/year (15kWh/day). A 1kW solar system will generate approximately 1570 kWh/year (4.3kWh/day), hence covering around a quarter of your usage.

Your yearly electricity bill will therefore be Usage (5475 kWh) Ė Solar output (1570kWh) = 3905 kWh.
